The Asymetrical straps

Find the full report of the CRITAC

Written by Marceau Bidal and Marion Cossin

History :

Aerial straps is a circus discipline that has been practiced for centuries around the world. It combines flexibility, technique, and strength. It's challenging to trace the origins of this discipline, but it's clear that it's constantly evolving. (Article by Pascal Jacob and Magali Sizorn).

Innovation :

New disciplines derived from aerial straps have emerged in the past. The Asymmetrical Straps were conceived and created in October 2021 at the National Circus School of Montreal by Marceau Bidal. They open the door to new figures and put the artist's balance in the air to the test once again.

Achievement :

A first prototype was created by the riggers at ÉNC (Jean-Philippe Dalcourt and Pascal Tétrault). They subsequently assisted in adapting this apparatus to enable the execution of a large variety of figures in a safe manner.

An acrobatic exploration of the apparatus was carried out in collaboration with Ilya Baranov (technical coach) and Howard Richard (artistic advisor) to push the development of this concept further.

Unique in the world :

This apparatus is being showcased for the first time on the international stage in April 2023 for the final exam at the National Circus School of Montreal. You can discover this unique apparatus in the act titled "Crash Éphémère".
